Non-disclosure Agreement. That usually finishes when the product is released or the company shows any of your illustrations online as a promo.
No problem!

Step 1. Know a lot about composition, proportion, form, anatomy, lighting, color, texture, how to draw, and how to paint.

Step 2. Finish the painting.

Step 3. ????

Step 4. Profit

Haha, well you know tutorials always seems very stright, but obviously I mess around a lot until I get what I want. So Id make a 1.5 point saying mess around and smash your wacom until something decent comes up ;D

Do you reference at all(aside from possible preliminary studies)? Seems like you had the face figured out pretty early on, and it looks like it could be a real person, it usually looks a bit cartoony when people don't use reference, but I wouldn't doubt some really are just that good.

Yes! I do use references, but dont like to stick to them too much, otherwise you end up copying a photo. Important parts such as faces or hands grabs quite a lot of attention, so I try to do a previous research or take my own photos for lighting or expressions.

I'm curious. Do you work in a single or multiple layers?

I worked in multiple layers and used to end up having massive files. Now Im trying to cut down the number of layers which is cool as it gives me more control over the whole image.

Thanks for the reply. I was curious because I once thought that many layers was the key to a good digital painting, so I used to paint on around 10+ layers. Recently though I have been using more like 2-5 layers and I am doing just fine.

Well, Im talking here about +100 layers, which obviously is not necessary to achieve the same result. I tried to organize them in groups, so lets say one for the background, one for figure, one for foreground. I dont know whether it was insecurity or what, but I remember every time I was happy with a bit, I just created a new layer XD.
Now, since Im using more the dodge and the smodge tools, which work better just in one layer, I try to keep everything more simple and dont worry about having to paint something twice if needed. I keep using layers, thats when I finish some of the figures, I cut it out and past it aside to keep working on a single layer.

100 layers!?!? Wow!! That would give me a headache.
